Patrick Durkin: Wisconsin’s drumming grouse numbers take big jump during latest spring survey

Six years after Wisconsin policymakers panicked over declines in the ruffed grouse population, the state’s “thunder chickens” climbed atop their drumming logs in big numbers this spring.
The DNR reports that statewide drumming rose 57% from a year ago, increasing 60% in the north and 41% in central areas. Drumming fell 56% in the Driftless Region. This spring’s drumming data fell just short of four previous highs since the surveys began in 1993. Those highs occurred in 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2011.

Partnership leads to reopened Green Lake Park in Oconto County, Wis., after longtime closure

After being closed to the public for nearly a decade, Oconto County’s Green Lake Park is back in business, thanks to a 25-year agreement between the Mountain Historical Society and U.S. Forest Service.
The local historical society will operate and maintain the park, located south of Mountain at 13322 Hwy. 32. The USFS had operated the park until closing it in 2015 due to budget cuts.

The Natural Resources Board (NRB) accepted the donation of 88 acres in Langlade County and approved land exchanges for property in Sauk and Green Lake counties at its June 26 meeting.

Menasha’s Fox River lock closed indefinitely to help protect Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago from threat of round gobies

The possibility of round gobies entering Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago will keep Menasha’s Fox River lock closed indefinitely. That decision was made in June by the Fox River Navigational System Authority (FRNSA) in Kaukauna.
The Fox River leaves Lake Winnebago from its northwest corner at Neenah and Menasha, then flows north about 39 miles to Green Bay. The river drops 168 feet during that stretch. Dams at Neenah and Menasha prevent boats or fish from entering Lake Winnebago. There are 17 locks on the river that could allow boats to run from Menasha to Green Bay if all the locks were in operation.

Fish, wildlife rule changes face scrutiny in Wisconsin

Natural Resources Board (NRB) members learned the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will examine 11 DNR questions and 31 Conservation Congress questions that were approved by citizens at the spring meetings this past April.
The DNR fisheries bureau asked seven advisory questions in April and, according to Justine Hasz, DNR fisheries chief, DNR personnel are now discussing the results on each question and could bring back the proposals on the 2025 spring hearings as proposed rule changes.

Ask a fisheries biologist: Categorizing Wisconsin trout streams by quality and access

Fishing for trout in small streams can be a lot of fun. It can also be very challenging. In our part of Wisconsin, tag alders line many trout streams and might leave only one or two access points, which are usually bridges.
Some streams might be worth a little extra effort; others might not have trout populations worth bushwhacking to access.
