Minnesota Pollution Control Agency seeks comments on plan to curb pollution in state waters

State conservation and environmental groups – including Minnesota Trout Unlimited – are encouraging the public to comment on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s proposed changes to two feedlot permit rules designed to reduce nitrate pollution statewide.
These permits, directed at the state’s largest animal feedlots, ”regulate the discharge of pollutants from livestock production areas and restrict the volume of pollutants entering state waters via manure land application,” according to the MPCA. The public comment period, which includes MPCA-staffed educational forums to answer questions, runs through Aug. 9.

Minnesota DNR plans to sell 80,000 school trust acres in the Boundary Waters to U.S. Forest Service

The Minnesota DNR announced last week a plan in which the agency would sell more than 80,000 acres of state-owned school trust lands within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness to the U.S. Forest Service, which currently manages the vast majority of the lands within the 1.1-million acre wilderness area in northeastern Minnesota.
Concurrently, the Forest Service announced it would cancel the environmental impact statement process that began as part of a land-exchange process with the DNR 10 years ago.

Bob Gwizdz: Most of Michigan’s Deer Management Initiative recommendations won’t help deer herd

I’ve spent a lot of time poring over the conclusions of the recently completed Deer Management Initiative, but I’ll be darned if I can see what the hours of effort, expended in that exercise, actually accomplished.
Most of the recommendations that came out of it are rehashes of ideas that have been floating around for years. And not many of them are going to do much to move the needle toward responsible deer management. It’s more about what hunters want for themselves than it is about what’s good for the herd.

Women interested in learning to waterfowl hunt can register for Iowa course

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is offering a program to teach skills needed to hunt, field dress and cook waterfowl to women who have little to no waterfowl hunting experience.
“Waterfowl hunting can be challenging and this course will teach basic strategies, proper equipment, where to hunt, safe shooting practices, and how to field dress, prepare and cook them,” said Jamie Cook, program coordinator with the Iowa DNR.
