Tom Venesky: Time to let farmers plant again on Pennsylvania game lands

Crop damage concerns have been at the forefront lately as the Pennsylvania Legislature considers bills aimed at reducing the impact of deer.

So far, not much has worked when it comes to reducing crop damage. Lengthy seasons, increased antlerless license allocations, ag tags, DMAP coupons – those are just a few of the things utilized to lessen the impact of deer on crops. But the formula – kill more deer, lower the population and reduce crop damage – hasn’t been that effective. If it had, then there wouldn’t be bills in the Legislature focused on addressing the issue.

Steve Pollick: Forming fishermen one bluegill at a time

If you want something to grow, you first must plant the seeds and then you have to water and cultivate the sprouts. I’m actually talking about turning kids into fishermen here.

That latter “gardening” action, cultivating and watering, is what my sons, Andy and Aaron, and I did about fishing with the youngest generation during a recent family reunion of our widespread clan. We had planted the “fishing seeds” with cane-poles, bobbers, and worms a few years ago at Froggy Bottom Pond during a family reunion at home. Now, in a sense, it was time for Round Two.

Construction of carp barrier closer to reality at Brandon Road Lock and Dam on the Des Plains River in Illinois

Earlier this month Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced that Michigan signed an agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Illinois to cosponsor the construction of the Brandon Road Interbasin Project.
This milestone agreement with the Biden Administration unlocks $274 million in federal and $114 million in state funding for the first of three phases of the $1.15 billion project that will prevent invasive carp and aquatic nuisance species from entering the Great Lakes.
