NWTF to celebrate 50 years of work in Wisconsin on July 27

The National Wild Turkey Federation, Cabela’s, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the hunter-conservationists from across America’s Dairyland will gather in Prairie du Chien July 27 for a celebration of the restoration of the wild turkey in the Badger State and NWTF’s more than 50-year history.
“We are beyond excited to gather all of our partners, volunteers and major donors from across the state to celebrate one of America’s greatest wildlife conservation success stories, both across the nation and here in Wisconsin,” said Tom Glines, NWTF director of annual giving.

A new decal seeks to help anglers spare wild steelhead in Minnesota

Officials at Minnesota Sea Grant are offering a new, quick-and-easy educational tool to help anglers distinguish between wild steelhead and coho and Chinook salmon caught in Lake Superior and its tributary streams and rivers.
The organization has a free “Know the Fish. Know the Reg” decal that explains the visual differences between the fish, which are considered near-doppelgangers by anglers, guides, and state natural resources officials.

Tim Eisele: Ontario’s remote waters and walleyes were the perfect getaway

It was the perfect Canadian fishing trip for a couple of first-time visitors.
Yes, indeed, as my youngest brother, Mike Eisele, and I drove the 725 miles up to Sturgeon Lake Lodge in northwest Ontario to satisfy our taste for walleyes, and celebrate Mike’s 65th birthday. The drive-in Canadian fishing adventure took on the feel of a remote fly-in trip, with access to several remote lakes, where nobody else was fishing and with no buildings or civilization around the lakes.

Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary designated

On June 6, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries released the final regulations needed to create a new Lake Ontario National Marine Sanctuary, which will encompass all of the United States’ portion of Lake Ontario east of the border separating Wayne and Monroe counties.
Once the new sanctuary is formally designated later this year, it will become the nation’s sixteenth national marine sanctuary, and the third such sanctuary established within the Great Lakes.

Minnesota Mixed Bag: DNR certifies nine new record fish

After making changes to the record fish program, the Minnesota DNR has seen steady interest by anglers in documenting their largest catches, as evidenced by the nine new state-record fish the Minnesota DNR has certified since March.
The DNR in March expanded the catch-and-release record category to add additional species, and also made more space for records in the certified weight category by creating a separate category for records established before a certified scale was required to document a fish’s weight in 1980.
