Missing boater search in Lake Erie halted off Painesville, Ohio

Authorities have suspended the search for a missing boater in Lake Erie after rescuing two others and pulling another person from the water who later died.
The U.S. Coast Guard Great Lakes station said a distress call was received just after 10:30 a.m. July 6, which authorities said directed them to an area off a Painesville, Ohio, communications tower. A helicopter was launched from the Coast Guard air station in Detroit and a boat crew from the Cleveland harbor headed out to search, but an hour later the helicopter was diverted to a separate rescue in the lake off Ashtabula.

Hot perch bite taking place on Ohio waters of Lake Erie

As predicted by Ohio Division of Wildlife fisheries biologists and seen the previous few summers, yellow perch have begun biting as the Lake Erie water temperatures are reaching their peak temperatures.
For around 10 years, yellow perch have been feeding more heavily on the Eurasian spiny water flea, a large, invasive zooplankton that has sharply increased in abundance in Lake Erie. However, observations by persistent perch anglers and Ohio Division of Wildlife creel survey clerks showed an uptick of perch catches have been occurring during the summer season when spiny water flea reproduction slows in hot water and their densities subside.

Pennsylvania hunting license sales go better this summer than in 2023

Hunting license sales went smoothly when round one began Monday, June 24, according to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, which rolled out a new process that staggers the demand for antlerless tags.
Although more than 30,000 buyers were in an online queue 10 minutes after the system’s 8 a.m. launch to purchase tags for the state’s three most coveted wildlife management units, the commission deemed the demand “manageable,” said agency spokesman Travis Lau.

Bill Hilts, Jr.: Outstanding fishing on Lake Ontario incites debate

“Fishing is off the charts! Incredible, like nothing I have ever seen,” said Karen Evarts at the Tackle Barn and Boat Doctors in Olcott, N.Y. That was a text I received from her on July 5.
“It was insane fishing on the Niagara Bar today,” said an excited John Van Hoff of North Tonawanda. “We caught 40 king salmon today!” That was a recent note from a friend who is addicted to salmon fishing.
Capt. Matt Yablonsky with Wet Net Charters in Wilson exclaimed it has been the best fishing he’s seen for this time of year that he can ever remember. “It’s been outstanding!”

Ron Schara: The best gopher trapper in Allamakee County, Iowa

Here’s another thing this nation needs: a National Pocket Gopher Trapping Awards Program.
I’m serious. I’ll volunteer as organizer. There was a day when I was the best pocket gopher trapper in Allamakee County, Iowa. It’s a title I bestowed on myself because gopher trapping is a solitary job so there were no witnesses to my trapping savvy. Just take my word for it.

Sunday hunting bill clears Pennsylvania Senate, amended version heads to House

In the span of seven days, proposals to lift the longstanding prohibition on Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania passed the state House and Senate, but has another legislative hurdle to clear.
Senate Bill 67 passed 33-17 on July 3, and it expands on legislation passed in 2019 that authorized three Sundays to be open for hunting, designated annually by the Pennsylvania Game Commission. The latest bill would erase any limitations on Sunday hunting and allows the Game Commission to decide which Sundays to include in various seasons.
