Waushara County joins growing list of more CWD-affected counties in Wisconsin

The number of counties with cases of CWD-positive wild deer continues to grow in Wisconsin with Waushara County joining the list in April with a 3-year-old buck found dead in the town of Wautoma in February that tested positive for the disease.
The buck was within 10 miles of borders with Marquette and Portage counties and, as a result, the DNR renewed a baiting and feeding ban already in place for Waushara County. Marquette and Portage counties currently have a three-year ban in place from positive detections within each county, so the Waushara County positive test will not impact those counties.

Ask a Fisheries Biologist: A look at Wisconsin’s freshwater shrimp

I have talked with many anglers who have spent time fishing lakes in North Dakota and South Dakota. They often return crowing about some of the fisheries built there, with a prey base of ‘freshwater shrimp.’
So what are freshwater shrimp and how are they special?

Loggers weigh in on northern Wisconsin deer herd past and present

They say if you want to know where the deer are, ask a logger. After all, the men and women who cut and haul timber for a living are in the woods every day of the year.
If you ask Terry Peters, he’s going to tell you he’s not quite sure where to find deer in northern Wisconsin.
“Last year, after 60 years, was the first year I never saw a nose, an ear, a side, a tine or a rump while I was hunting,” Peters said. “I’m disheartened. I don’t feel good.”
Meanwhile, Henry Schienebeck, executive director of the Great Lakes Timber Professionals Association, said while walking timber sales over the past winter he “hardly saw a track.”

50,000 turkeys shot during Wisconsin’s spring season for first time since 2009

Wisconsin’s turkey hunters broke the 50,000 harvest mark for the first time in 15 years when the spring season ended May 28 with a registered kill of 50,435 jakes and gobblers.
By most accounts, few turkey enthusiasts would have expected that to happen. In fact, here’s what this reporter wrote two years ago in a post-season recap of the spring 2022 hunt: “Wisconsin’s largest flocks and best hunting are history, and that particular history won’t repeat itself. Wisconsin hit its turkey-hunting peak from 2007 to 2009 when the statewide harvest averaged 52,630 jakes and gobblers three straight springs. The spring harvest hasn’t cracked 50,000 since, and it’s doubtful we will again.”
