Mountain lion considered threat to the public killed from Scottsbluff, Neb., subdivision

A mountain lion was killed by a member of the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office the evening of June 19 at a subdivision just north of Scottsbluff, Neb.
The mountain lion, twice spotted Wednesday in the Scotts Bluff Country Club subdivision that surrounds a golf course, was shot because it was an immediate threat to the public.

Summer scouting: Start laying the foundation for your best deer season ever

Archery season may be weeks away, but Minnesota expert Bob Borowiak is already gearing up to do some of the most important scouting he’ll do all season.
While most successful deer hunters recognize the need for thorough scouting, many wait until just before the season opener to begin. Not Borowiak, who gets serious about gathering intel when most of us are sharpening our golf games, spending hours on lawn care, or chasing fish around. Most of us would do well to listen to Borowiak, a retired 76-year old from Houston, Minn.

Simple and spunky, fishing for summer bluegills never gets old

As summer approaches, I am taken back to my time as a youth, and to my son’s time when he was a kid to the simpler times of fishing. These types of outings are still very possible and should happen just as often.
A particular trip many years ago readily comes to mind. As we eased the boat into that tiny cove on a crowded lake, the children made their first casts. The bobber did not even have time to settle on the water’s surface before it plummeted downward. Within seconds, the first fish of the evening was on and my friend’s young son was grinning ear to ear.

Delaware River’s Pocono section great for bass in Pennsylvania

Just the day before I had picked up a flint arrowhead as I walked the edge of a cornfield along the Delaware River in the rain.
This day I latched onto an 18-inch smallmouth – considerably larger than the Woodland-period point – and just as exciting. The wet, plowed land had made the black arrowhead stand out from the surrounding earth; the crystal clear Delaware made the olive hued smallmouth just as conspicuous as it rolled under the surface.
Here in the Pocono section of the Delaware, you can get excited by either take.

Mixed news for duck production outlook in the Dakotas

Wetland conditions across large portions of the Prairie Pothole Region in North Dakota and South Dakota are vastly improved since the end of winter, thanks to weeks of steady precipitation going back to early April.
That’s good news for waterfowl and waterfowl hunters, but waterfowl managers in both states are pumping the brakes on any lofty expectations for this fall’s flight of birds out of the duck factory.

New York’s waterfowl seasons announced as vet, youth hunts continue

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, in collaboration with the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, has set migratory game bird hunting seasons for the 2024-25 hunting season. These include seasons for ducks, geese, rails and gallinules.
Earlier this year, DEC announced a process and season dates for ducks for the 2024-2025 through the 2026-2027 hunting seasons.
