Guy Groenewold’s grandfather emigrated from Germany in the early 1920s as the political climate became more and more untenable. The family began a chick and egg business in Forreston, Ill., and started buying local fur from trappers as well. A fairly lucrative endeavor at the time, the Groenewold family quickly transitioned to buying fur on a more serious basis. The business prospered.
By WWII, GFW was a major fur buyer in Illinois. Groenewold recounts how his dad, Grant, was skinning muskrats while listening to the radio describing the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1945.

In March, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation met with anglers in the 1000 Islands region regarding the future management of black bass in New York. New York Outdoor News provided coverage and I feel there’s a couple of things that warrant further review.
Many in attendance came hopeful to hear if Region 6 would consider regulation changes implementing a catch-and-release bass season for the eastern basin of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Instead, they heard our DEC Bureau Of Fisheries Chief Steve Hurst indicate that the regulation change process will take some time.

Making scientific concepts and findings accessible to a general audience has long been a challenge for researchers. Most scientific journals have little readership outside academia, and the articles that appear in them are rarely written to be accessible to anyone outside a particular field of study.
The researchers involved with the Voyageurs Wolf Project in Minnesota have done far more than most in recent years to build broad public awareness of some of their novel findings about wolf behavior in and around Voyageurs National Park. And now they’re collaborating with the International Wolf Center and a graphic designer to present a new exhibit that provides a unique perspective on their ongoing studies.

Among the laws that passed during the recent Minnesota legislative session, one struck me as deserving more scrutiny. It’s a simple, two-word addition to state statute 97A.512 that addresses the sale of inedible portions of game animals. The two words? “Adipose tissue,” or what we commonly refer to as body fat.
For background, there’s a reason the venison burger you receive from your meat processor has been stamped “Not For Sale.”
A Westchester County high school student’s painting of a striped bass earned her a top honor in the annual Wildlife Forever Art of Conservation Fish Art Contest.
Jenny Xu, of Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., actually won the Art of Conservation Award in this year’s contest, a distinction that is second only to the Best of Show Award Winner, which was won by Texas youth Mia Macias’ painting of a black crappie. Xu’s painting also finished in third place nationally among students in grades 10-12.
