Length of Canada geese season reduced by Pennsylvania Game Commission

Pennsylvania’s 2024-25 migratory game bird seasons have been set.
Annual migratory game bird seasons are selected by states from frameworks established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Game Commission selections were made after reviewing last year’s hunter harvests, population survey data and public input. There is one significant change to Pennsylvania waterfowl seasons this year, according to Amanda Hoyt, Game Commission waterfowl biologist.

Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission addresses hooking mortality for struggling striped bass

As concerns about low striped bass numbers continue, the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission on May 1 took additional steps to address the number of striped bass dying after being caught and released, as well as unsustainable commercial fishing rates.
The Atlantic commission’s Striped Bass Management Board voted to establish a workgroup to explore options to reduce the significant number of striped bass that die after being caught and released.

Commentary: Pennsylvania Game Commission’s current CWD-testing protocol no longer adequate

Recent comments from a Game Commission biologist describe how chronic wasting disease is spreading even faster than expected.
And recently, I read where two hunters in Texas died after eating infected deer meat. Even though the U.S. Centers for Disease Control claims there is no link between their deaths and CWD, the report, which was published in a peer-reviewed journal, is very alarming. The Game Commission needs to consider the Texas report and advise if its position on consumption and testing of deer in CWD-prevalent areas has changed, or not.

New Pennsylvania Game Commission leader, Stephen Smith, reaffirms agency’s direction

Stephen Smith, the new executive director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, was an attorney in private practice when Pennsylvania’s so-called deer wars inspired him to rethink his career.
As an avid hunter – and with an undergraduate degree in political science – Smith felt deeply affected by the agency’s radical new deer management plan and wanted to play a part in advocating and defending what it represented – a science-based approach to wildlife management.

Dam removal, repairs benefitting brook trout nearly complete on Michigan’s Boardman River

A 15-year, $27 million Boardman Ottaway River Reborn project that removed three dams south of Traverse City has been a boon for brook trout, and plans for a fourth dam will bring the world’s first fish passage research facility to the waterway.
Kimberly Balke, program director for the Conservation Resource Alliance, outlined how the dam removals completed between 2012 and 2018 transformed the Boardman River, known as the Ottaway by American Indians, during a presentation to the Natural Resources Commission during a May meeting in Traverse City.
