Ohio’s Division of Wildlife hosts open houses for CWD education

To present updated information about the status of the Ohio Division of Wildlife’s (DOW) response to chronic wasting disease (CWD), four open house sessions were held recently in northwest Ohio.
They were advertised through e-mail contacts with hunters from the DSA counties who bought licenses in the past couple of years, local landowners, with post cards, and even using radio ads. A postcard invited people to join the DOW to hear about 2023-2024 harvest and test results, future management plans, and participate in a question-and-answer session.

Ohio Insider: The rebirth of the Cuyahoga River is a remarkable story

A lot has been happening in the Ohio outdoor world over the past two weeks. If you would, please indulge me in sharing a few items of importance.
The story of the rebirth of sorts of the Cuyahoga is remarkable. From the time the Division of Wildlife decided last year that steelhead would be stocked into the river, the angling public has been looking forward to it with great intrigue. If the Cuyahoga turns out to be as hospitable to these fish as the other rivers in the steelhead program, it will be a great success story for the fishery.

Lake Wilhelm is a great fishery, getting better in Pennsylvania’s Mercer County

Some lakes are prime spots to target walleyes. Others are well-renowned for their muskies. Still others shine because of their largemouth bass or their panfish.
Then there’s Lake Wilhelm. Located in Mercer County, it’s a relatively large impoundment, at 1,724 acres. Most of the lake lies within M.K. Goddard State Park, minus a 240-acre portion at the northwest end falling within the boundaries of State Game Land 270.

Star Watch: Arcturus and Bootes

It’s almost summer, and you’ll have to stay up later now for skies to darken enough to see these celestial features, but trust me, it’ll be worth it!
If you follow the arc from the handle of the Big Dipper, you come to a bright star, Arcturus, by far the most prominent feature in the constellation Bootes, the “herdsman” according to Greek mythology.
