After last year’s outbreak of avian flu devastated the New York State Department of Conservation’s Day-Old Pheasant Chick Program, the program is back in action.
The program returned this year after operations were temporarily paused when the program’s flock at the Richard E. Reynolds Game Farm, located in Ithaca, was wiped out due to the highly pathogenic illness. This year, chicks were imported from out of state and the program was able to continue. Day-old pheasant chicks are supplied free of charge from the agency to approved applicants who provide an appropriate rearing space and public release site, the DEC said.
