In late March, the talk among waterfowl professionals across the U.S. Prairie Pothole Region – the epicenter of duck production in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and parts of Montana – revolved around one word: drought. A lack of ephemeral water could dramatically affect the breeding season, they said, especially for mallards and pintails, the spring’s earliest migrants.
