Minnesota House passes gun bills relating to storage of firearms, requiring gun thefts be reported

Acknowledging no single law is going to prevent all tragedies, Minnesota Rep. Jamie Becker-Finn, DFL-Roseville, nonetheless urged passage of a firearms storage bill she’s sponsoring in the hope that fewer youth may die from gun accidents.
Existing laws on firearms storage would be expanded to specify that a person must either store a firearm unloaded and equipped with a locking device or store the firearm in a firearms storage unit.

New York’s whitetail harvest data shows antlerless take down big in 2023-24

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently released white-tailed deer harvest statistics from the 2023-24 hunting season. The estimated harvest reflects a statewide decrease of 9.6%.
In 2023 (which includes early 2024), 209,781 whitetails were taken compared to 231,961 in 2022. The number is also down from the five-year average of 229,839. The greatest contributor to this decrease was a lower antlered deer harvest.

Legacy, environment, bonding bills progress in Minnesota

The Legacy omnibus bill will be heading to conference committee after the Minnesota House and Senate passed their versions this week.
House File 4124, authored by Rep. Leon Lillie, DFL-North St. Paul, and Senate File 5116, authored by Sen. Foung Hawj, DFL-St. Paul, are the two Legacy omnibus bills. These are the expenditures from the dedicated sales tax passed in 2008. The two bills had a couple different amendments, which a conference committee will reconcile, but otherwise the overall appropriations are similar.

Wild horses will remain in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park

Wild horses will stay in North Dakota’s Theodore Roosevelt National Park amid fears from advocates that park officials would remove the animals from the rugged badlands landscape, a key lawmaker said April 25.
Republican U.S. Sen. John Hoeven said he has secured a commitment from the National Park Service to maintain wild horses in the park, although the number remains to be determined. Roughly 200 horses now roam the park.
