Glenn Sapir: Learn from my mistakes in the turkey woods

Try to restrain yourself and any companions from the almost reflexive action of suddenly pointing in the direction of a gobble. The movement might end the tom’s approach and cause the bird to flee. (Photo courtesy of Howard Communications)

Some people might consider me an expert turkey hunter. I’ve hunted them for some 45 years. I’ve shared the woods with some of the greatest turkey hunters of our time. I’ve hunted turkeys in 11 states. I achieved the Grand Slam in one spring. I even wrote a very popular book about turkey hunting called Secrets of the Turkey Pros.
All of those credentials might seem impressive, but they haven’t shielded me from making mistakes as a turkey hunter. Perhaps, by my sharing some of my regrettable moments in the turkey woods, you will avoid making the same mistakes.
