Michigan Natural Resources Commission OKs waterfowl seasons, concern for mallards remains

Michigan’s 2024 waterfowl hunting season will look very much like it did in 2023.
At its meeting earlier this month in Lansing, the state Natural Resources Commission voted unanimously to implement a proposal from the DNR Wildlife Division for a season nearly identical to last year’s. The proposal includes a 60-day duck season and a 107-day goose season.

Deer season opening day under review in Pennsylvania

For Pennsylvania hunters still longing for a return to a Monday deer season opener, the Game Commission’s April 13 meeting was a bad news/good news affair.
First, the bad news: Commissioners approved opening day of the firearms deer season as Saturday, Nov. 30.
The good news? In a major concession to hunters still angry about the change from a Monday opener five years ago, President Commissioner Scott Foradora announced that the opening day … day … will be reviewed.

Pine marten comeback plan is delayed ‘indefinitely’ in Pennsylvania

Responding to stubborn opposition by hunters, Pennsylvania game commissioners again postponed action on a plan to reintroduce pine martens to the state.

The decision to “indefinitely delay” acceptance of the American Marten Reintroduction and Management Plan came in a split vote by board members. Voting to postpone adoption of the plan to return the native furbearer to the state were commissioners Robert Schwalm, Scott Foradora, Allen Di Marco, Stanley Knick, Todd Pride and Dennis Fredericks. Opposing postponement were commissioners Michael Mitrick, Haley Sankey and Kristen Koppenhafer.

Trumpeter swans downlisted from threatened in Ohio

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Ohio DNR (ODNR) Director Mary Mertz recently announced that the Ohio Wildlife Council has voted to remove the trumpeter swan from the state’s threatened species list. The delisting culminates a 28-year effort by the ODNR Division of Wildlife to restore a population of trumpeter swans in Ohio.

Ohio youth turkey hunters nearly match last year’s harvest totals

Ohio’s young turkey hunters were largely successful during their special hunt on April 13-14.
Preliminary harvest figures from the ODNR Division of Wildlife showed that Ohio’s young hunters harvested 1,785 birds during the 2024 youth hunt. According to Division of Wildlife biologist Mark Wiley, that total is just a few dozen birds shy of last year’s youth total (1,823).
