Preparation is half the fun when it comes to New York’s April 1 trout opener

Little gets us trout anglers revved up quite like the opening of trout season in New York.
If I stopped to list all of the trout streams, creeks, rivers, and lakes I’ve fished in New York State I’d use up my word count in the first paragraph. Suffice it to say that the spring trout season is one of my favorites, and with thanks to our venerable NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, we’re all lucky enough to be able to enjoy it year-round in many areas now.

The Outdoor Steward: Properly transplanting bareroot trees and shrubs this spring and beyond

I planted my first bareroot shrub in 2003. Since then, I have planted thousands of bareroot tree and shrub seedlings and transplants. My track record has been pretty good, and most failures could be blamed on extreme locations or summer drought.

Wisconsin DNR state nurseries distributed more than 3.8 million seedlings from more than 50 different trees and shrubs last year alone. So Auer knows his way around bareroots.

Let me explain upfront that I will never tell you specific places to go fishing. If I mentioned that walleyes were biting like crazy on a specific lake, it could get over-fished by the hordes of fishermen who read this column.

If you hunt turkeys in April, you might want to start scouting now

The whitetail world is full of strategies that revolve around patterning bucks. The turkey world is different. Most folks head out with a loose plan on where they’ll hunt, and then they let the birds dictate their moves.
This is great if you have enough acres to truly roam, but it can be a tougher proposition on smaller properties.
