Beyond Minnesota: Indiana’s state-record burbot caught from Lake Michigan
Anthony Burke, of Cedar Lake, Ind., was fishing for perch in Lake Michigan on Jan. 6 when he landed a burbot that was 37.25 inches long and weighed 14 pounds, 3.6 ounces. Burke’s catch bested the previous record, held by Phillip Duracz, by nearly 3 pounds.

Minnesota DNR details plans for Get Out MORE funds
The Minnesota DNR explained the investments in the Get Out MORE initiative during the 2024 DNR Roundtable on Jan. 19. The breakdown gives a better understanding of how much money is going to which projects to benefit Minnesotans.
The DNR received $149.9 million from Gov. Tim Walz’s One Minnesota Budget during the 2023 Minnesota legislative session. Get Out MORE was created to focus funding toward modernizing outdoor recreation experiences.

Minnesota DNR, Board of Water and Soil Resources get pieces of Walz’s 2024 bonding plan
Gov. Tim Walz announced on Jan. 16 the state’s 2024 infrastructure plan – the capital investment recommendation for the 2024 Minnesota legislative session.
The $982 million proposal focuses on infrastructure across the state along with interests in water and transportation infrastructure. The Minnesota DNR and Board of Water and Soil Resources were included in the governor’s recommendations.

My first game warden station was in Bottineau, N.D. Having spent time there in junior college, the uniqueness of the Turtle Mountain’s fish, wildlife and habitat was part of the outdoors DNA, which gave north central North Dakota its own unique identity.
