Tom Venesky: Crossbows a big reason for Pennsylvania’s vanishing small-game hunter numbers

It is easy to point to declining populations as the reason why fewer people hunt for small game today. Same thing with turkeys – which, until recently, it was believed that a drastic drop in turkey numbers was to blame for the sharp decline of hunters pursuing the birds in the fall.
There’s a reason why fewer people are hitting the hedgerows for rabbits and the mountains for turkeys, and I don’t think it has anything to do with availability of game.

For New York native Ed Kohler, life has been 91 years of perpetual outdoor motion

In a room cluttered with the memories of a life well lived, a snarling mountain lion glares down from a green wall. It was taken in Montana by New York native and outdoorsman Ed Kohler and represents only a fraction of his achievement afield.
Kohler, who grew up in Monroe County just outside of Rochester, got his start in the outdoors at a young age. His father, who worked at Eastman Kodak, was responsible for his introduction.

Looking for a winter project? Here’s how to make awesome bird feeders

Do you love birds? Do you want to attract more of them to your backyard and help them survive the cold winter? Do you wish to have fun and educational time with your kids? If you answered yes to any of these questions, keep reading.

Michigan hunting seasons saw 10 firearm-related incidents, no fatalities, in 2023

Hunters across Michigan produced a good safety record in 2023.
Through all 12 months and several different hunting seasons, there was a total of just 10 firearms-related incidents (accidents) and no fatalities.
“It was a good year because we didn’t have any fatalities. As far as the pure number of incidents, we were about average, but the injuries were relatively minor,” Sergeant Cary Foster of the DNR’s Law Enforcement Division told Michigan Outdoor News.

Ron Schara: In 2024, resolve to be involved in outdoor issues

New Year’s resolutions seem to be going out of style. Just as well, probably. Typically they’re promises to ourselves that are not kept. I know. I’m good at breaking resolutions.
As proof, the day I quit cigarettes was not the first day of January. It was supposed to be. I lied to myself, my friends, my family about giving up the habit on the first day of a new year.
