Southern Illinois the focus of ongoing feral swine watch

Illinois officials investigated more than 30 reported sightings of feral swine in the state last year.
Out of those reports in 2022, many involved what were actually loose domestic pigs or pets. Three of the reports pertained to an adult boar in the Shawnee National Forest area in Pope County, and one was about an adult boar DNR had been tracking in the Jackson County/Union County area.

Where do fish come from in Illinois? Let’s have a talk

This isn’t designed to be a talk about sex, but in a way it is, I guess, so maybe glance around the room to make sure nobody is peeking over your shoulder.
Fact: Fish aren’t the best at, you know, what science calls “reproduction.” I only bring this up because the Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery in Mason County has been celebrating its 40th anniversary this month. The DNR facility opened in 1983. Today it is the largest of Illinois’ three fish hatcheries.

Iowa club’s Fall DNR Night offers insight into the state’s fisheries

Each November, the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club (IGLFC) hosts its annual fall Department of Natural Resources night at Oak Hill Outdoor on the north side of Milford, Iowa. With over 350 members, the goal is to get as many people as possible there to learn more about the efforts of the law enforcement and fisheries biologists across northwest Iowa.

Pennsylvania Game Commission adjusts late-season pheasant releases

The recent detection of highly pathogenic avian Influenza – known as HPAI – at a private Northumberland County game farm has prompted the Pennsylvania Game Commission to adjust its late season pheasant stockings to help safeguard the agency’s pheasant program and better ensure it will continue next year in the 2024-25 hunting seasons.
In the next two weeks, the commission will release fewer pheasants statewide than initially planned.

Funds sought for Iowa ‘Great Monarch Skyway’ sculpture promoting pollinator importance

An Iowa emeritus art professor is seeking funds to bring a butterfly-based sculpture to life.
David Richmond, long-time professor at Simpson College, told the Iowa Natural Resources Commission recently that he would like to see “Great Monarch Skyway” become a reality. The structure would represent a salute to butterflies, their place in nature and their promise for the future.

A year in review: 2023 was a pretty good year in New York’s outdoors

As 2023 draws to a close and we ready ourselves for another year, it’s time to review how the last 12 months treated us in the great outdoors. For the most part, it was a good to very good year – depending on your focus and outdoor pastimes.
New York’s portions of the Great Lakes of Erie and Ontario enjoyed some outstanding fishing once again and the future continues to appear bright.

Pennsylvania flintlock season: Touching history with each shot

Ever since the Pennsylvania Game Commission established the first season of hunting deer after Christmas with a flintlock rifle, I’ve been a participant.
Initially, those early years allowed hunting on select Pennsylvania state game lands, but eventually the whole of the state — except areas not allowing guns — was included in available areas to pursue whitetails with the colloquially termed “smoke-pole.”
