Commentary: Just who is in charge of the Wisconsin DNR?

Since Adam Payne abruptly resigned as Department of Natural Resources (DNR) secretary in October, Steven Little, DNR deputy secretary, has been the acting secretary.
There has been no announcement by Gov. Tony Evers who the new secretary-designee might be, and one reason could be because potential replacements may fear being appointed to a position just to be fired by the Republican legislature, as occurred to four members of the Natural Resources Board (NRB) in October.

Mild temperatures make for a great chance to tackle winter whitetail habitat projects

I’ve been trying lately to chip away at a deer hunt here and there, aiming for another doe to fill the freezer while holding onto dwindling hope for an ever-more-elusive mature buck.
Not helping my cause has been mild, dry December weather. But for this deer hunter, a warm, dry winter is exactly what the habitat doctor ordered.

Set for Jan. 5-7, Let’s Go Fishing Show in Illinois remains angler celebration in 30th year

Crappie fishing buddies Tom Henske and Bill Royce both call the annual Let’s Go Fishing Show “a meeting of the minds.”

“There is an endless crowd of other fishermen to talk to and learn from, and that’s not even counting the seminars,” explained Henske.

Oak Duke: Some advice for filling a late-season deer tag in New York

Gone are the early archery days… falling leaves, mild times, along with opening day of gun season and all its camaraderie logged now in the Book of Past Memories.
Now the page is turned. The tail end of this deer season waves an unfilled tag like a flag. Is it time to throw in the towel… clean the muzzleloader for the final time?

Ben Moyer: The cycling rewards of deer hunting include ushering in a new hunter

Deer hunting’s rewards are diverse. At its core is the individual’s vigil, watching the woods for deer. The moment you first see a deer, followed by those as you witness grace and beauty that you love but, in this setting, are willing to destroy, is riveting. There is nothing else like it in everyday life.

Strong cisco year-class benefits Lake Superior’s lake trout

There was good news coming out of the Dec. 13 Natural Resources Board (NRB) meeting regarding the Lake Superior cisco and lake trout fishery, as a healthy year-class of ciscoes means lake trout anglers can look toward some “good years” ahead, thanks to a strong forage base.
