Streams of Thought: Some confusion regarding Minnesota’s new “storing garbage and other waste on ice” law

Sarcasm aside, there’s also a new law that’s now grabbing the attention of Minnesota ice anglers. You may or may not have read about state statute 97C.363 in the Dec. 1, 2023, edition of Outdoor News – the “storing garbage and other waste on ice” law.
You won’t find many detractors regarding this legislation, which includes specifics right down to cigarettes and fireworks.

Come out of your shell; try the ice of Otter Tail County’s South Turtle in Minnesota

Otter Tail County’s South Turtle Lake is a two-basin system totaling just over 830 acres. The east basin is shallow and lined with pencil reed and bulrush stands, while the west end offers more depth, but plenty of vegetation as well.
It’s a pretty simple lake from a fish community standpoint. South Turtle is your basic bass/panfish type of fishery, but it also kicks out a few respectable northern pike, along with an occasional walleye.

Make the last few days of the Minnesota muzzleloader season count

With preliminary numbers from the recently completed firearms deer season showing a 7% decline in harvest from last year, it’s not surprising that muzzleloader license sales are up a bit, as hunters continue to try to bag their deer.
Although plenty of hunters shot deer during the firearms deer season – 112,636 was the preliminary total from the recently-completed season – many hunters saw fewer deer and harvest numbers dropped. That doesn’t bode well for your chances to shoot a deer, but with persistence and a little luck, there’s still time.

Southeast Minnesota hunter kills 200-inch bucks in back-to-back seasons off 40-acre farm

Many hunters dream of shooting a buck whose antlers score over 200 inches. It’s a rarity to record two 200-inch bucks in a lifetime.
But Luke Onstad of Spring Grove, Minn., achieved that rare accomplishment in back-to-back seasons. In 2022, he harvested a 22-point nontypical buck with a 236 7/8-inch gross score and a 232 4/8 net score. In 2023, he shot another 22-point nontypical buck with a gross score of 207 inches and a net score of 202, as measured prior to the standard 60-day drying period.
