Salt patches spreading on the Chesapeake’s shores as rising seas are hurting farmlands

Climate change is claiming farmland at “an alarmingly high rate” in one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most productive agricultural regions, inflicting tens of millions of dollars in economic damage, a team of scientists says in a new study.
Their research spotlights a pernicious side effect of sea level rise: the salt left behind from water washed onto land after storms or unusually high tides. The resulting “salt patches,” supercharged by evaporation, can poison large swaths of cropland, reducing yields and farm profits.

Fishing mortality continues to haunt East’s striped bass

Despite increased catches of Atlantic striped bass in 2022, fishing mortality threatens to derail efforts to increase the species’ spawning stock by 2029.
After Atlantic striped bass were declared overfished by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission in 2019, several measures were enacted to limit mortality on the commercial and recreational fishing segments. However, a significant increase in the recreational harvest in 2022 means more changes could be on the horizon.

Business as usual? All Pennsylvania Fish & Boat commissioners reappointed

A new process for selecting commissioners for both the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission and the Game Commission was instituted by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration earlier this year.
The new process was supposed to put new applicants for open seats an equal footing to those seeking reappointment. Is the new process doing what was promised? After all of the applications, interviews and feedback, all five of the sitting commissioners were reappointed for another four-year term.

If hunters better understood the science behind the whitetail rut it just might make them better at pursuing their quarry.

“Deer in most of the United States are going to rut at the same time,” Adams said.

Slow down and keep quiet: Follow these rules for better pheasant hunting

Many of our lives today are busier than ever, but when it comes to pheasant hunting, being in a hurry is probably the worst thing we can do.
Too often, it seems pheasant hunters are on a mission and have that need to keep going — sometimes at what I would call breakneck speed. That’s where I firmly believe they are making a big mistake. This is especially true when it comes to late season.
