Video: Bow bucks from South Dakota and Minnesota a product of adjusting within bedding cover

I showed up for a short out-of-state bowhunt in South Dakota on the afternoon of Nov. 7 and did a drive around the small property I had gained permission on.
Most of my planning for this trip had focused on a field of grassland. A low-ground area here created some good habitat diversity — a mix of timber, cattails, willows and grasses adjacent to a small creek that bordered an agriculture field. That drive on Nov. 7 quickly revealed a gut-punch. The grass had been mowed, leaving nothing but ankle-high cover around the small slough.

CWD detected in buck shot near Wabasha in southeastern Minnesota surveillance zone

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced on Nov. 27 that a deer harvested during the opening weekend of firearms season near Wabasha in southeastern Minnesota has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
The hunter harvested adult buck was taken in deer permit area (DPA) 342, within the southeastern Minnesota CWD surveillance zone where hunters were required to have their deer tested for CWD during the opening weekend of firearms season.

Prepare now with Iowa’s early ice-fishing season on the horizon

Here on the Iowa Great Lakes, there have been times when I have been ice fishing on Thanksgiving. It’s only been three to four times over the past 40 years, but there is always that chance. More often, it’s somewhere around the middle of December.

Nature Smart: Big hares of the Arctic

Recently while on a trip to photograph polar bears in the sub-Arctic, I spotted an animal that embodies adaptation to its fullest, the Arctic hare (Lepus arcticus).
I was moving across the tundra with the Arctic vegetation in its autumn blazing glory. Bright reds and vibrant yellows painted the landscape and turned everything into a vibrant visual scene. Large, smooth rocks, often covered in lichens, punctuated the landscape. It was perfect habitat for an Arctic hare.
