Marengo’s Herb Franks an Illinois angler to remember

The Oct. 31 passing of Marengo’s Herb Franks was covered widely in local media. I’m sure you’ve seen it. I don’t want to be repetitive, but there are a few things I’d like to mention.

Herb was an extremely close friend. He was famous for his work as an attorney, as a visionary, as a businessman, a Democratic politician, and for simply being a wonderful human being. Oh, by the way, Herb loved fishing.

Wisconsin family from Marathon County marks 54th season of deer hunting traditions

When the Wisconsin 2023 gun deer season kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 18, the hunting members of the Day family will mark their 54th year of chasing white-tailed deer on the family farm in eastern Marathon (pronounced Mar-a-tin locally) County.
I don’t know that Ken Day, of Wausau, is the official family chronicler, but he’s the family member who contacted the office some time back with a black-and-white photo from the 1970 deer season and that sort of started the ball rolling on the Day hunting story.

Logging your outdoor adventures is worth the effort

When I was an editor at Field & Stream Magazine, I would often travel on assignment to somewhat exotic fishing and hunting destinations.
At the end of each day afield or on the water I would retreat to my tent, cabin or wherever else I was lodging and write down copious notes of the day’s activities. From those notes I could later write articles that captured the details of the trip. Furthermore, from time to time I would later read those notes, allowing me the joy of reliving those special experiences. Unfortunately, I didn’t take the same notes for my much more plentiful local outings. Oh, how I wish I did!

Baiting of whitetails is a persistent offense in Minnesota

On the days leading up to the Nov. 4 firearms deer opener, Minnesota DNR Conservation Officer Mitch Lawler received word from the agency’s enforcement’s aviation unit about suspicious deer movement in the Alexandria area.
Lawler, along with other officers, visited the location and found bait on the property. Then, on the Nov. 4 firearms deer opener, Lawler found more bait at the site. He eventually wrote up citations and gave out fines to the individuals for baiting deer. Along with fines, the hunters firearms were seized, and the hunters won’t allowed to hunt big game for an entire year if convicted.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service declares Scioto madtom, a fish native to Ohio, extinct

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) recently declared the Scioto madtom, a fish native to Ohio, extinct, according to the Ohio DNR (ODNR) Division of Wildlife. The Scioto madtom, a small, nocturnal species of catfish, was formerly found in a small section of Big Darby Creek, a tributary of the Scioto River in central Ohio.
