Minnesota DNR assesses state of southeast stream trout

As autumn plays footsie with winter, you’d be forgiven if you thought stream-trout fishing in southeastern Minnesota had ended and that fisheries managers had little to do until spring’s thaw. But nothing could be further from the truth: Trout fishing and trout management are year-around endeavors. Even the region’s trout are busy with spawning this time of year.
“We’re open for business, that’s for sure,” quipped Vaughn Snook, Minnesota DNR assistant area fisheries supervisor in Lanesboro, on Monday.

New York students learn conservation from pheasant stocking

On a beautiful Adirondack fall day, the Moriah Central School’s “Introduction to Fish and Wildlife” class had the chance to release both cock bird and hen ring-necked pheasants.
The course is taught by Tiffany Pinheiro at the Moriah Central School in New York’s Essex County. Four juniors and four seniors took part in the outdoor wildlife experience along a wetland area, known locally as Barnaby Swamp in Westport.

Wisconsin hunters gather for ruffed grouse at Northwoods’ ‘Checkpoint Charlie’

Tom Heberlein has long trimmed two faint trails through the back end of his Northwoods forty to ease access to the Chequamegon National Forest’s deer, ruffed grouse, snowshoe hares, and even beavers.
In turn, when visitors step from those public forests onto Heberlein’s turf, they don’t find a “No Trespassing” sign at the border. They do, however, find a stark sign with block letters reading: “YOU ARE LEAVING THE AMERICAN SECTOR.” The same message repeats below in Russian, French, and German.

Illinois’ November chill ideal for some fishing, too

By the time you are reading this, November will have arrived. The month usually sees our temps plummeting below freezing on a regular basis. Snow is always a possibility, along with sleet, hail, cold rains, and any other surprises that good old Mother Nature has in store for us. It’s no wonder that many people detest the upcoming winter season.
Don’t just moan about the weather, find something to enjoy. There are plenty of activities available.

Harmony in the Wild: Here’s how to avoid user-group conflict on Illinois’ public land

It’s that time of year – autumn in southern Illinois has outdoor enthusiasts roaming about in droves. Because southern Illinois has so many types of public land and such big swaths, it seems like everybody and their brother has come to visit not just the Federal sites like Crab Orchard NWR, Rend Lake, and, of course, Shawnee National Forest, but also our DNR properties.
It’s that time of year when all the user groups seem to collide: hunters, anglers, foragers, bikers, horse riders, field trialers, hikers, and campers.
