Adam Payne to leave Wisconsin DNR secretary post Nov. 1

In an unexpected announcement Tuesday, Oct. 24, Adam Payne, who was appointed by Gov. Tony Evers on Dec. 27, 2022, to become secretary designee of the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), announced his resignation from that post as of Wednesday, Nov. 1.
The 56-year-old Payne informed Evers on Oct. 20 that he was resigning effective Nov. 1. He said that it was a “bittersweet” moment as after three decades of work in public service, 24 of those years in Sheboygan County, he needed to spend more time with his family.

Resurrecting a salmon fishery in New York’s Niagara River

When the days in New York begin to shorten and the colors of autumn slowly take hold of the landscape, Chinook salmon begin the process of returning to the rivers and streams that they have come to understand as home – whether real or perceived.
Approximately 50% of those fish in the lake are stocked, held in pens to trick them into thinking where home is or slowly released from the Salmon River Fish Hatchery. By the middle of September, in the Niagara River anyway, the first significant wave of kings arrives in the Niagara Gorge – high rock walls carved out by the mighty power of Niagara Falls over thousands of years.

Literacy matters: Know how to read buck rubs

Other than a car hood-sized scrape with a nice licking branch hanging over it, there isn’t any deer sign that gets the average hunter excited quite like a rub on a thigh-sized tree trunk. Seeing freshly scarred-up bark on a good-sized tree tells you one thing: a big one was there, not long ago.
While bucks will make rubs pretty much any time their antlers are out of velvet, the frequency of laying down sign increases greatly in the run-up to the rut. This is an opportunity for willing hunters to scout out rubs, and set up near them to fill their tags. It’s exciting, and full of promise, but it’s not as easy as it sounds.

A fungal ‘fight club’ in Pennsylvania’s woodlands: Understand your mushrooms

When meandering through the crisp and colorful hardwood forests this autumn, you may notice a myriad of different mushrooms fruiting around almost every turn.
Some mushrooms are perched from the leaf litter like small umbrellas. Others have colorful caps dotted in scales, while others grow off decaying wood like colorful rosettes of coral, doing their part to break down logs into nutrient-rich soil. On your way to and from the treestand this season, perhaps take a moment to get to know the fungi of the forest.
