Tina Taylor from Marquette managed to bag a U.P. black bear on her first bear hunt thanks to a pair of organizations that provide opportunities for people with disabilities to enjoy the outdoors. Those organizations are Courage Incorporated based in Ishpeming and Camp Josh in Ontonagon County.
Taylor took part in the first bear hunt hosted at Camp Josh. Taylor suffered a spinal cord injury in 2011 that partially paralyzed her. Through persistent rehabilitation efforts, she was able to regain her ability to walk by 2022.

Every deer hunter wants that wide-beam eight-pointer or better; bear hunters dream of topping the 500-pound mark, and bass fishermen only post on Facebook when their largemouth exceeds 5 pounds – well, maybe 4 because those fish are good, too.
But honestly, the majority of harvested deer in Pennsylvania have only six points, or are does; a bear of 300 pounds is a fine accomplishment, and the vast number of largemouths caught and released in Pennsylvania don’t even weigh in at 3 pounds. Indeed, most largemouths in Keystone public waters are scaled at 1½ to 2½ pounds. They don’t draw whistles at tournaments, but they’re still fun to catch and their availability in numbers makes up what they lack in weight.
Deer hunting season is underway and now that northwest Ohio has an area where chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been detected in multiple deer and appears to be spreading, some hunters are electing to have harvested deer tested for the deadly disease.
The 2023-24 Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations, pages 13 to 15, has information about the disease and some of the special opportunities and obligations for those hunting in areas where it has been found. For example, in the three-county Disease Surveillance Area (DSA) of Hardin, Marion, and Wyandot counties, mandatory in-person deer check-ins are required for certain dates at listed locations.
