Dove scouting done right: Here’s how to find birds before the opener

Dove hunting is one of the most underutilized seasons we have here in the Upper Midwest. While targeting the speedy game birds down South is nearly a way of life, here in the north country we don’t view it as a tradition. The truth is, dove hunting is some of the most exciting wingshooting you can get into, which also results in a tasty reward.
Not only are they a true test of wingshooting skills, but they also stick to their habits when it comes to preferred feeding spots, loafing trees, and water holes. If you’re not around one of these three, you mostly won’t be around doves. Here’s how to scout out these spots to make the most of your season.

Second species of ramp, or wild leek, found in Pennsylvania

The presence of a second species of ramp, Allium burdickii — commonly known as narrow-leaved wild leek — has been documented in southwest Pennsylvania by a team of Penn State researchers in a new study.
This plant species never before has been documented in the state, and the researchers suggest the discovery shows a need to protect remaining populations of the plant. The more common and well-known broader-leafed ramp species, Allium tricoccum, is widespread in the state and often collected.

Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission releasing channel catfish across state, blues in Ohio River

A few readers recently contacted Pennsylvania Outdoors News concerned that the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission is stocking invasive flathead catfish into the Susquehanna River.
Mike Parker, communications director for the agency, dispelled the notion.
“We do not raise or stock flathead catfish. We never have,” he said.
But that doesn’t mean the agency hasn’t been busy stocking catfish – just not flatheads.

Maumee River project in Ohio teems with possibilities

A golden opportunity – well, at least a tantalizing possibility – exists to open up perhaps 30 more miles of the Maumee River to downstream fisheries at the Grand Rapids-Providence dams through a project to conserve Howard Island there.
The island, which covers nine acres and looks somewhat like the outline of an old battleship when seen from the air, sits about 32 miles from Lake Erie and anchors the “wings” of two low-head dams that reach out from the opposite-bank villages of Grand Rapids and Providence. The property was purchased in the past year by the Perrysburg-based Black Swamp Conservancy (BSC) for about $75,000 in state-furnished H2Ohio funds.
