Deer Management Assistance Program permits available on Pennsylvania game lands this year

Pennsylvania’s Deer Management Assistance Program – better known as DMAP – is available on some state game lands for the first time in the 2023-24 hunting seasons.
Through DMAP, hunters can get permits that allow them to harvest antlerless deer – one per tag – on the specific property for which the permit was issued.

Vaccine program involving raccoons in Pennsylvania helping stem the spread of rabies

A raccoon baiting program aimed at stemming the spread of rabies is now underway in western Pennsylvania for the 22nd straight year.
Through early September, oral vaccine doses wrapped in fishmeal or a vanilla-flavored waxy substance are being dropped from helicopters and fixed-wing airplanes over less populated parts of the state’s western counties and distributed by hand around abandoned lots, under dumpsters, down storm drains, and in woody sections of public parks. The goal is to eradicate rabies in western Pennsylvania and keep it from moving further west into Ohio, and the effort appears to be working.

Regulations relaxed a little on Chesapeake Bay crab harvest

The region’s fishery managers are far from confident that a surplus of blue crabs now lurks beneath the bay’s surf. But they say that results from the just-released wintertime survey were promising enough to relax some of the restrictions.
