Cormorant population continues to increase on Michigan waters

Outdoors enthusiasts and anglers in Michigan have seen double-crested cormorants in increasing numbers during the past few decades.
Fish-eating birds, double-crested cormorants are found near rivers and lakes, as well as saltwater coastal areas, and are widely distributed across North America, from the Aleutian Islands in Alaska down to Florida and Mexico. Here is a look into the impact they are having on some Michigan waters.

Iowa research has ramifications for turkeys in surrounding states

It’s a sight that’ll bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened turkey hunter or researcher: a turkey nest decimated by predators that feast on egg clutches. To biologists and hunters, it means yet another unsuccessful nesting effort contributing to dwindling turkey populations across the country.
Scientists say the number of turkeys in the U.S. has been on the decline for decades. From 2014 to 2019, University of Georgia professor Dr. Michael Chamberlain and colleagues estimated an 18% overall decline.

Hoover Reservoir angler lands Ohio’s new record bigmouth buffalo

Andrew Peffly went long-lining on July 8, trolling for crappies with 10-, 12-, 14-, and 16-foot rods. He goes long-lining for fun, often with family and friends. When serious, he goes single pole with forward-facing electronics.
At the end of the day, little did Peffly know that he would be the latest fish record-holder in Ohio.

New York’s Fulton County wildlife sports museum doubles in size

When the Wildlife Sports and Educational Museum opened in Vail Mills, near Amsterdam, in Fulton County back in 2006, it seemed like a sizable operation. Bob Kazmierski, a life-long taxidermist, had years earlier secured a former grocery store and helped organize a non-profit group to establish a 13,000-square-foot museum that would represent nearly every aspect of hunting, fishing, trapping and shooting sports, and much more.
Now the museum has doubled its space, as well as its displays.
