Jordan Lee sets the record for big bass, wins Major League Fishing event on Michigan’s St. Clair

He got the Lake St. Clair monkey off his back. Alabama’s Jordan Lee is the Major League Fishing General Tire stage six champion after totaling 47 pounds, 13 ounces on Lake St. Clair.
Lee proved to be the man to beat all week long and put on another impressive smallmouth performance on day’s two’s June 29, catching a five-fish limit worth 23-4.

No-mow May helps give pollinators a chance to pollinate

Did you do No-Mow May?

I did. The concept, in case you haven’t heard, is to not mow your lawn until after May, so the pollinators (largely bees) can take advantage of the wildflowers that are so numerous in spring. Two Michigan cities that I know of officially endorsed the idea by announcing they would instruct code enforcement officers not to issue citations for uncut grass. (Can you guess which two?*)

Deer Creek Lodge renovation in central Ohio a work in progress

Work to remodel and update Deer Creek State Park Lodge is moving forward with a new main entrance now completed and the 110 guest rooms undergoing $6 million in renovations.
The lodge, built in 1979, has long needed updating – as do many of the eight state park lodges. The DeWine Administration has promised to do that work in the next few years.

Jeff Gustafson details smallmouth tactics that helped him win the 2023 Bassmaster Classic

When Jeff Gustafson won the Bassmaster Classic on the Tennessee River this past March it was a journey that began 30 years prior to his epic triumph.
“I fished my first bass tournament when I was 10 years old,” said Gustafson, who grew up on Canada’s north end of Lake of the Woods. “My dad took me. He didn’t bass fish, but he knew I liked it. He just wanted to fish for walleyes. He saw that I was interested in bass fishing, and we started fishing some of the tournaments around here.”

Tough winter in parts of the country still affecting whitetails during summer ’23

Forester Stuart Boren from Florence, Wis., a border town adjacent to the Upper Peninsula, documented on June 25 the collateral damage that a severe winter has on whitetailed deer.
“I was watching a big doe from the house,” Boren said. “We had been seeing her for weeks and she was used to us. She had her head down and I could tell she was licking something. A half hour later, after she was gone, I went to where she had been.”
The doe had birthed twin fawns, both of which were dead.
