Silver flies released to control hemlock woolly adelgid in Pennsylvania’s Allegheny National Forest

The U.S. Forest Service announced the release of a new biological control on the Allegheny National Forest to help combat the non-native, invasive hemlock woolly adelgid.
Hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae) is an invasive forest insect native to Japan and the Pacific Northwest. The adelgid poses a serious threat to eastern hemlock and Carolina hemlock, which are at risk of fatal infestations since they lack natural resistance.

Chesapeake earns another C grade for bay health

As the deadline looms for the Chesapeake Bay’s 2025 clean-up goals, the annual progress report from the University of Maryland shows that the estuary’s overall health is neither declining nor improving by significant margins.
That can be interpreted as a win of sorts, given the challenges that the bay faces from a growing population, intensifying farming practices and climate change.

Run the inside weed edge for bass, pike and muskies this summer

Early summer is a time of furious activity for almost every fish species. Early spawning species like pike and walleyes are well beyond post-spawn and on their way to summer habitat. Later spawners, like muskies, bass, and panfish, are just post-spawn and in transition away from spawning areas, on the move to locations where they can feed and recover energy spent during spawn.
