Michigan’s two-story Littlefield Lake is managed for walleyes

Isabella County’s Littlefield Lake has pleasing aesthetics and clear water, but don’t expect to catch a limit when fishing there.
It’s a deep lake with lots of steep drop-offs close to shore, and limited aquatic vegetation so fishing can be downright difficult.
But the lake supports a good population of warm-water fish species including largemouth bass, walleye, pike, and panfish, so it is worth checking out.

Notes off a soiled cuff: Pennsylvania Game Commission sponsors dirt-track races to promote hunting license sales

A reader called our office last week to report what he believed to be an indiscretion by the Game Commission. The agency, he said, is sponsoring a dirt track race car!
This on top of “wasting all that money” sending employees to the National Wild Turkey Federation Conference in Nashville. The money could be better spent on habitat, he added.
Turns out the commission actually is sponsoring a race car – along with two races at Selinsgrove and Port Royal speedways in Snyder and Juniata counties, in September. The events, intended to promote hunting season and hunting license sales, are called “Race to Hunting Season.”

Commentary: Time to merge Pennsylvania agencies’ law enforcement units

Back in August of 2017 this newspaper published my letter saying that the best way to alleviate the budgetary issues facing Pennsylvania’s Game and Fish & Boat commissions was to consolidate the law enforcement branches of both agencies.
It even suggested adding the law enforcement branches of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ bureaus of state parks and forestry. The benefits of consolidation would be cost effective – one training facility, a standard training curriculum, one state-of-the-art radio system, an allocation of officers based on seasonal demands, increased officer safety and salary, benefits and retirement.

Pennsylvania Game Commission updates public on results of CWD surveillance

With a little time yet to go in the 2022-23 surveillance year, the Game Commission has already detected chronic wasting disease in more deer this year than the one before, once again highlighting the threat the disease poses to Pennsylvania’s deer and elk, and hunting heritage.
Since July 1, 2022, the Game Commission collected nearly 11,000 CWD samples from deer. Hunter-harvested samples made up the bulk of those, with more than 7,000. To date, a total of more than 400 wild deer tested positive for CWD, 243 of them harvested by hunters.

Maloney slams Pennsylvania Game Commission’s attendance at NWTF ‘Pub Crawl’

Events and expenses regarding a trip by approximately 30 Pennsylvania Game Commission staff, and three commissioners, to a convention in Nashville, is again being called into question by a state legislator.
In February, 33 Game Commission personnel attended the National Wild Turkey Federation Convention and Sport Show, which was held Feb. 15-19 at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center in Nashville.
