Catching shallow-weed walleyes in the summer on Iowa’s Great Lakes

For the past 45 years, I’ve enjoyed fishing walleyes on the Iowa Great Lakes: Big Spirit Lake, East Lake Okoboji and West Lake Okoboji. For many years, however, I missed a real opportunity during the summer months.
After fishing the weed edges in mid-June into July, I would then move to deep water, trolling bottom bouncers or pulling crankbaits. That was good fishing, but I was missing a walleye gold mine: summer walleyes in the weeds. Since doing that, I’ve found a population of walleyes that spend the summer enjoying life in the shallow weeds.

Archery range at Pyramid State Recreation Area in Illinois receives much-needed facelift

The archery range at Pyramid State Recreation Area in Pinckneyville, Ill., is in the process of getting a much-needed facelift and renovations thanks to the cooperative efforts of DNR, the Perry County 4-H and Friends of Pyramid State Park.
As DNR funding and staffing declined over the years and the maintenance backlog grew across the state, many sites were forced to prioritize what items in the parks received needed repairs and maintenance. Unfortunately, during that period, the archery range at Pyramid SRA had fallen into disrepair, the course and trail had become somewhat overgrown, and the targets had become largely nonexistent.

Waterfowlers mourn the passing of legendary Roger Strand

Roger Strand, a “gentleman’s gentleman” whose decades of conservation work on behalf of wood ducks and other waterfowl, informed and inspired countless kids and adults alike across Minnesota and the United States, died peacefully in his sleep June 6, 2023 at Bethesda North Pointe in New London, Minn. He was 87.
A renowned surgeon by occupation, Strand was a conservationist at heart, a hunter and teacher and citizen scientist who had, his friends say, a seemingly insatiable appetite for nature and teaching people about it.

Tracking dogs may now be used without a lead in Michigan

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission this month approved new regulations for tracking dogs that will allow them to track wounded game off lead. The change follows months of discussion between the NRC, Michigan United Conservation Clubs, hound hunters, and tracking dog groups.
Michael Riepen, president of Michigan Deer Track’n Dogs, told Michigan Outdoor News the new regulations accomplish two of three major goals the group has pursued for more than four years.

Lake Superior’s swollen tributaries fuel steelhead passion

When someone teaches you how to fish their favorite Lake Superior steelhead river, you’re obligated to learn how precisely you may identify the place to friends.
Calvin McShane didn’t hesitate when asked.
“Just say we’re in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula,” he said.
Can I be more specific?
“We’re 50 miles from the nearest Walmart, just upriver from where I married my wife,” he said.

Commissioner selection process altered slightly in Pennsylvania

The process for a citizen to be chosen to serve on the boards of the Pennsylvania Game and Fish & Boat commissions has been altered slightly.
A recent announcement made by Gov. Josh Shapiro’s administration indicated that the long-standing role of the Governor’s Advisory Council for Hunting, Fishing and Conservation to recommend the most qualified finalists for the governor to pick from to fill commissioner seats will be eliminated.
