Excise tax federal funding source sends record cash haul to Minnesota for outdoor use

Thanks largely to firearms and ammunition sales, the Minnesota DNR has been allotted a record $49 million and change for fiscal year 2023 from the Wildlife and Sport Fish and Restoration program, an annual agency funding source accrued from federal excise taxes on hunting, shooting, and fishing equipment, and small-engine fuel.
The funding is used to support state wildlife conservation efforts, hunting and fishing education, and outdoor recreation, among other uses.

Here’s some gear guidance for getting on gobblers

You’re going to need a gun, calls, camouflage clothing, and maybe a blind, decoys, a vest, and other incidentals. You don’t “need” all these items to kill a gobbler, but they’re good to have.
Recently at a local sporting goods store, I saw a box of 10 turkey loads that were $70. Talk about overkill. My turkey mentor used a standard 2 3⁄4-inch No. 6 shot of duck and pheasant loads and killed a gobbler every year. A three-inch 12-gauge lead load of 4, 5 or 6 shot is a deadly combination.

Michigan trapper recalls releasing many incidental wolves from sets

Most, if not all, U.P. trappers who try to catch coyotes, fox, or bobcat invariably end up catching a wolf because the larger predators are attracted to the same type of sets.
The fact that wolves have become less rare in the U.P. also contributes to incidental catches of the non-target animals. Based on the experience of Wakefield’s John Jakovich, wolves are being caught in traps set for mink, raccoon, and muskrat.
