Outdoor Insights: Hunters can help Minnesota DNR closely monitor turkey populations

Minnesota spring turkey hunters who identify their permit area they intend to hunt when purchasing their license are not restricted to hunting in only that area, but that information helps the DNR in the agency's efforts to closely monitor turkey populations around the state. Tim Lyons, the agency’s upland game research scientist in Madelia, told me the permit area “effort” data in combination with harvest totals will help generate better turkey population estimates in localized areas.
