Hudson River: Water clarity was great at last look and the smallmouth and largemouth bass were biting. Look for smallmouths around rock structures during the higher tides. Best baits to use during these times are crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Largemouth bass were leaving there summer weedbeds and starting to make there migrations into the creeks. Best baits to try are Senko-style worms and jig-and-pig combinations.
Wallkill River, Rondout Creek, Sturgeon Pool and Lower Esopus Creek: As the water temperatures start to drop, these waterbodies really start to turn on. In the Wallkill River, smallmouth bass and walleye fishing can be really good. Try using crankbaits, spinnerbaits and curly-tailed grubs. In Rondout and Lower Esopus creeks, look for largemouth bass holding close to laydowns and brush piles. Use jigs and Texas-rigged creature baits.
East of Hudson waters: Anglers reported nice-sized trout, bass and panfish in Croton Falls, Cross River and Kensico reservoirs. Trout fishing has been really good all throughout the Croton Watershed.
West of Hudson reservoirs: Smallmouths were biting good on green pumpkin-colored tube jigs on the Rondout and Ashokan reservoirs. This time of year look for big brown trout cruising the shorelines.
