St. Paul The Minnesota DNR reminds hunters not to mistake a trumpeter swan for a Canada goose during the September early goose hunt that began last weekend. Fines for shooting these swans can be up to $700, with possible confiscation of shotguns and rest

Swans are three to four times the size of Canada geese, according to Steve Kittelson, DNR trumpeter swan restoration leader. The all-white swans and the light gray young swans also have necks equal to their body lengths. Minnesota now boasts the highest number of trumpeter swans in the Midwest. Grand Rapids, Minn. The Grand Rapids area fisheries office of the Minnesota DNR has scheduled a public informational meeting to gather input on the future management of designated muskellunge lakes in Itasca County.

Those lakes include Deer, Moose, Little Moose, Spider, and North Star. They’ve been managed as designated muskie lakes since the 1960s, according to Chris Kavanaugh, area fisheries supervisor. On these lakes there’s a ban on spearing for all species. The meeting will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16 beginning at 7 p.m. in the training room
