ST. PAUL, Minn. — Otter Tail County will host the 2020 Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener. The opener will be held May 7-10. Thumper Pond Resort will serve as event headquarters. It’s a solid walleye fishery, with nearly all of the walleyes netted in the most recent DNR survey there between 12 and 19 inches, and the average just under 16 inches.
And a favorable forecast could make for a comfortable fishing opener after all.
With 26 days until the opener, there’s reportedly 25 inches of ice on the host lake. And Green Lake is far from the only Minnesota waterway that’s on pace for record-late ice-out.
Walleyes get all the attention on ‘The Opener’ — and in general in the state — but those who do chase northern pike could be rewarded nicely for their efforts.
While event has been held on the Mississippi River in the past, Gov. Mark Dayton will see a much different Mississippi in the greater St. Cloud area when he helps kick off the season — a shallower, more lazy river that calls for different angling techniques than those used on lakes and big rivers.
