License increase looming for Michigan hunters and anglers?

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is working to increase hunting and fishing license fees with forthcoming legislation during the lame duck session.
The DNR is vetting the proposal through stakeholder hunting and fishing groups across the state, and the vast majority of statewide conservation organizations are on board with the increases, which come with automatic future adjustments tied to the Consumer Price Index.

State forest plan in Michigan includes considerations for deer wintering yards in the UP

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is vetting a new state forest plan that includes special considerations for deer wintering yards in the Upper Peninsula focused on balancing food and shelter long term.
The addition of special analysis units (SAU) in the plan currently open to public comment will allow the wildlife division to set goals for certain species, with benefits for deer that rely on 36 deer wintering complexes across the U.P.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials are assessing camera damage and preparing to analyze as many as 6 million trail camera images following the first full year of an ongoing wolf abundance project.
DNR Wildlife Research Specialist Tyler Petroelje presented an update to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission in October on an effort that began as a pilot in 2022 to better estimate Michigan’s wolf population.

Bass, walleye catch rates improve but perch rate remains flat in Michigan’s Bays de Noc

Anglers are catching more smallmouth bass and walleyes while the perch harvest has remained flat in the Bays de Noc in recent years, trends influenced in part by invasive mussels and round gobies.
Department of Natural Resources officials in October presented an update to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission on fisheries research and management efforts in the bays, where the state has stocked walleyes since the 1970s to counter overfishing in the decades prior.

Michigan DNR will no longer relocate nuisance geese, relying instead on euthanizing problem birds

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is eliminating its goose relocation program, and will rely instead on lethal force through a federal government contract to deal with nuisance geese.
“The department has already decided on these programmatic changes,” Barb Avers, the DNR’s waterfowl and wetlands specialist, told Michigan Outdoor News. “There’s a number of reasons we need to make this change.”

Minor regulation changes considered at Michigan Bear Forum

Stakeholders at a Michigan Bear Forum in late August generally supported maintaining current harvest levels in the northern Lower Peninsula, and some slight increases in certain Upper Peninsula units.
Members of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources advisory group considered harvest quotas for individual Bear Management Units in both peninsulas, as well as several proposed policy changes in St. Ignace on Aug. 24.

Michigan Natural Resources Commission considers tweaks to trout and salmon regulations

The Michigan Natural Resources Commission is considering several relatively minor changes to trout and salmon regulations, as well as rules for handling reptiles and amphibians.
Four fisheries orders presented to the NRC in August for approval in September are primarily focused on ironing out issues with trout and salmon regulations on specific streams, and making it easier for homeowners to relocate reptiles and amphibians.
