Pennsylvania is a top turkey hunting state, but we’re not alone.
And one of the other hotspot states is changing things up in ways that might benefit the turkey population, and hunters, in Pennsylvania. Missouri has long been a turkey hunting magnet, but recent concerns about hunting pressure and crowding – particularly on public land – has led the state Department of Conservation to make a significant change targeting nonresident hunters.

More Sunday hunting may be in store in Pennsylvania

Hunters can expect additional Sundays to be added to the 2026-27 seasons when the Pennsylvania Game Commission board meets on Jan. 30-31.
Currently, an additional 13 Sundays were added via an executive order last fall. Those Sundays concluded on Dec. 7 during the firearms deer season, but there appears to be support to carry it further in 2026.

Bird flu killing flocks of snow geese again in Pennsylvania

Avian influenza appears to be impacting snow geese along the eastern edge of Pennsylvania.
In December, several hundred snow geese were discovered at a Northampton County quarry, and an avian influenza outbreak is the likely cause. Since the initial finding, the Pennsylvania Game Commission now estimates that 900 snow geese died at the site.

Deer drives always made me uneasy. I’ve participated in plenty, and admit it can be a fun way to hunt. But no matter how fast-paced the action was, the risk was always inherent. And obvious.
When you have a group of “drivers” moving through the woods directly toward a line of “standers,” with deer in between, it goes against every standard of safety.

For something that is the norm across the country, the idea of merging Pennsylvania’s game and fish agencies wouldn’t seem like a hard thing to do.

Reina Tyl is happy to talk turkey again.
In September, Tyl switched her role as the Pennsylvania Game Commission grouse and woodcock biologist to take over the wild turkey post. The move fills the void left by the retirement of former wild turkey biologist Mary Jo Casalena, and for Tyl it brings her back to familiar ground.

Pennsylvania Rep. Dave Maloney says game commission not following laws with elk tag drawing

A high-ranking member of the House Game and Fisheries Committee accused the Pennsylvania Game Commission of not following the statutory process when it comes to the elk tag drawing.

State Rep. Dave Maloney, R-Berks, who is the minority chair of the committee, raised several concerns about the elk tag process during a Nov. 18 committee hearing. Specifically, Maloney said the Game Commission is required by law to conduct the elk tag drawing in public at the Elk Country Visitor’s Center in Benezette.

CWD in northeast Pennsylvania adds challenges for some deer processors

The presence of chronic wasting disease in the northeast region of Pennsylvania has impacted the ability of some processors participating in a deer donation program for the upcoming rifle season.
The statewide firearms season opened Nov. 29 and concludes on Saturday, Dec. 13. New this year is the inclusion of an additional Sunday in the season – Dec. 7. The season also included Sunday, Nov. 30, which had been the case prior to this year. However, the occurrence of CWD in the area has resulted in some changes for hunters.

Pennsylvania Game Commission dismisses game warden for misconduct

The Pennsylvania Game Commission has terminated a game warden amid allegations of misconduct.
Nelson Yocum, who had been a game warden in northern Chester County, is no longer employed by the Game Commission, the agency said in a Nov. 12 statement. Yocum had been on unpaid administrative leave since Sept. 6 after the agency received a citizen complaint alleging misconduct, according to the statement.
