Commentary: Growing old in the outdoors can be a daunting task

There are special feelings and apprehensions as folks get older. As an aging hunter and fisherman, I began noting this 16 years ago at age 50.
Mortality, limitations of certain activities, and the sadness that this reality brings is often difficult to reconcile. I’ve often believed over the years, that I really did not fear too much in the outdoors, but as time went on, certain uncertainties came to the fore.

Commentary: Different fishing disciplines can teach a lot to the individual angler

Freshwater and saltwater fishing are very different pursuits in many ways. But, they are both still fishing. Water and methods may be different, but techniques for both can be modified and projected to help catch more fish in both arenas.
Fishing has been part of my life since about age 10. I was brought up by a father who grew up in New England and did a lot of fishing with his half brother in the Boston area.

As a child growing up in a suburb just east of downtown Columbus, Ohio, I never really imagined that I would ever become a hunter.
My father, a World War II U.S. Coast Guard/U.S. Navy veteran, who later became a professor with his masters degree and Ph.d., taught me how to fish at an early age. He also instructed me in any sport that interested me … baseball, football, and basketball.

I consider myself a naturalist. Naturalists are folks who look at nature, interpret what they see, and are able to pass on their knowledge to others about the natural world.
As an outdoors person, educator, and park ranger for many years, I am always seeking more knowledge, and appreciate people who are exemplary in their field. In recent years, I was reintroduced to a real expert in the realm of studying and interpreting nature to the greater enrichment of people young and old.
