Rest easy, fellow fishers. Reports earlier this week indicated that a delayed ice-out in northern Minnesota will happen by May 13, Mother Nature-willing. And for some popular waters, ice-free status likely will be attained a week before the big launch of boats come opening day.

While no sheds were discovered on a walk this spring, we did find a dead deer. All indications were the deer was last year’s fawn (size) and that its death was recent. The carcass was undisturbed, except for some hair that had fallen from the tail. Starvation likely was the cause, but I prefer to gain knowledge beyond assumption.

What would a legislative session be without it? The “it” about which I write is legislation pertaining to gray wolves – the species that, if it knew the attention it received and the hand-wringing it caused in the human populace, would have a head too big to fit through a doorway.

The Minnesota DNR on March 30 signed an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service that puts a wrap on – for the time being – concerns that arose nearly five years ago regarding timber harvest on state wildlife management areas.

While Dave told me multiple times that receiving the award is a great honor, I look at it a bit differently.
To me, the honor is being able to A) select an outstanding conservationist for the award; B) interview and get to better know that individual; and C) write about that individual.
Dave Pauly’s dedication to sharptails – “firebirds,” he affectionately calls them – hasn’t diminished in the nine years since his DNR retirement. In fact, he’s more devoted particularly to the birds these days, expending time and energy and using his accumulated knowledge in leading the charge to create habitat for a wildlife species – a “species of greatest conservation need” in Minnesota – that continues to inspire and fascinate him.

The Minnesota Board of Animal Health announced March 28 that Dr. Marion Garcia, chosen as the BAH executive director and state veterinarian last August, would no longer serve in the position, effective immediately. The move comes as the state Legislature considers changes to the makeup of the board of directors and oversight of cervid (deer and elk) farms, and days prior to the season’s first discovery of highly pathogenic avian influenza in a backyard poultry flock in Le Sueur County.

Conservation groups lined up to hop aboard the RAWA train last week, as federal legislation – the Recovering America’s Wildlife Act – was reintroduced in the U.S. Senate.
The bill would “make nearly $1.4 billion in annual funding available to state and tribal wildlife management agencies, supporting critical conservation work, enhancing fish and wildlife habitat, and boosting America’s outdoor recreation economy,” according to a press release from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers.
