Several BWCAW entry points are inaccessible due to road washouts and flooding in Minnesota’s Superior National Forest

Like much of northeastern Minnesota the Superior National Forest experienced heavy rainfall from a series of severe thunderstorms that moved through the area on June 18, 2024. Rainfall amounts from 6 to 7 inches or more have caused washouts and flooding on numerous roads across the 3 million acre forest. Some areas also experienced trees being blown down from isolated winds associated with the thunderstorms.

Superior National Forest’s Wildlife Biologist Dan Ryan slows the Forest Service SUV down and pulls over to the edge of the snow-packed road. Getting out of the vehicle, he takes a closer look at some animal tracks crossing the road and trailing off into the spruce trees.
Keyhole-shaped impressions in the two-day old snow give away the travels of a Canada lynx.
