Huge flathead catfish, potential Pennsylvania record, caught in Susquehanna River

Mike Wherley, of Fayetteville, Pa., caught a giant flathead catfish May 13 below the Safe Harbor Dam in the Susquehanna River. Weighing 66 pounds, 6 ounces, it reportedly will be the new Pennsylvania record for the species.
Wherley took the flathead to Columbia Bait and Tackle where it was weighed on a state-certified scale and verified by Jeff Schmidt, a waterways conservation officer with the Fish & Boat Commission. After filling out the paperwork, Wherley reportedly put the fish back in the livewell of his boat and drove it to Columbia River Park to be released back into the Susquehanna.

Pennsylvania poaching spree ends with more than 100 deer killed, six suspects charged

Six residents of Franklin County were criminally charged in late May for allegedly going on what the Pennsylvania Game Commission termed “a poaching spree,” killing more than 100 deer in six months.
They allegedly shot the deer and left most of them to rot over this past fall and winter. Commission law-enforcement officials called the actions a “complete disregard for our wildlife resources.”

Woman injured by black bear near Nisswa, Minnesota

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced in a news release this weekend that a woman was treated and released from the hospital after being injured by a black bear near Nisswa early Friday morning.
The woman was staying at a cabin near Gull Lake and let her dog outside shortly after midnight. She went into the yard to check on the dog and the bear swiped at her, striking her in several places. The bear left the immediate area after the incident. The DNR release said that woman’s injuries were serious but not life-threatening.
