Long-time outdoor writer Leo Maloney, of Sherrill, is this year’s recipient of the 2023 New York State Outdoor Writers Association’s “Pass It On” Award.
Each year, NYSOWA selects a member who is recognized as someone who should be acknowledged for their dedication to “Pass It On.” This annual award honors the person who has done the most to “pass on” our outdoor heritage.

The New York State Outdoor Writers Association recently held its annual conference in Corning, Steuben County May 11-14. It is the first in-person conference that NYSOWA has held since the fall of 2021. Over two dozen members attended.

The New York State Outdoor Writer’s Association honored Glenn Sapir, of Putnam Valley, with the group’s Hans Paller Memorial Award at its annual conference in Corning on May 13.
Sapir is a regular New York Outdoor News columnist and past president of NYSOWA. He is a long-time member of the organization who has won numerous awards through the years beyond New York State.

Once again, young artists from New York have earned high honors in the Wildlife Forever and Bass Pro Shops annual Art of Conservation Fish Art Contest. Wildlife Forever recently announced the national winners of the 25th anniversary of the event.
Judging took place on Friday, April 28, with a panel of esteemed judges from around the country. Winners were chosen from over 4,500 entries from around the world.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation recently announced a $13.24-million, five-year partnership with the Adirondack Watershed Institute (AWI) of Paul Smith’s College to administer the Adirondack Park Watercraft Inspection Steward Program (WISP).
The announcement, made during Adirondack Day at the New York State Capitol, will protect the Adirondack Park’s resources from the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) that damage ecosystems.
New York’s Invasive Species Awareness Week is June 5 – 11, and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is reminding boaters to exercise Clean-Drain-Dry practices to battle aquatic invasives.
