The Wisconsin DNR expects to hire up to 10 game warden recruits this year and is accepting applications through May 7.
The recruits will begin training next January or April, depending on the applicant’s law enforcement experience. Applicants must be at least 21 years old and already have earned or be planning to earn at least 60 college credits within their first five years of being hired.
The University of Minnesota launched the program in 1973. Five years later it became the purview of the MPCA. Volunteers now conduct a simple water-clarity test of a designated water twice a month from April through September.

A 68-year-old angler from West Virginia died while fishing the walleye spawning run on the Maumee River on April 1, authorities said.
According to an account in The Blade of Toledo, Lucas County Coroner Dr. Thomas Blomquist said angler Mark Doll was walking upstream when he became submerged in the water near Side Cut Metropark.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced in a release on Monday, April 22, that after conducting a thorough species status assessment using the best available science, the agency determined that lake sturgeon do not require listing under the Endangered Species Act.
The Service’s 12-month finding shows ongoing management efforts, such as fish stocking, have contributed to the conservation and resiliency of the species.
