Ryan Rothstein: Time to get to know your local bucks

I don’t normally start becoming antsy about getting trail cameras out quite yet, but with the number of local bucks that made it through last season, I’ve been itching more than normal to see what’s out there.
Full disclosure: I have a few cameras set up broadly to cover ground and see what’s around. Typically, I wait until at least Aug. 1 for that, but there’s nothing wrong with getting some early intel.
And anyway, with Minnesota having a mid-September archery opener, it’s good to gather as much pre-season information as possible if you’re looking to punch your buck tag early.

Ryan Rothstein: Here are some reasons why your arrow isn’t hitting the bull’s-eye

One of my favorite things about vertical bows is that, despite the tremendous technological advances of the past few decades, it still takes tremendous dedication to consistently place an arrow where you want it. Even with high let-off compound bows, high-tech releases, and range-finding fiber optic sights, a dozen things still have to go exactly right to hit the 10-ring.
I know as well as anyone that September will be here in the blink of an eye. If you’re having a bit of trouble grouping your arrows in the center ring, here are the most likely reasons why.

Ryan Rothstein: The fascinating way weather patterns, precipitation impact deer herds

The weather roller coaster continues, and it’s almost mind-bending to take a look back through data and actually see how drastic the swings have been.
Last year, following a record-breaking snowpack and insane winter in Minnesota, it sure seemed like the drought pattern in my area was over. No sooner did that thought cross my mind that the faucet shut off … for the entire summer. After May 3, the last decent rain of spring 2023, it would take until the end of June to cumulatively see another inch of precipitation.

Need a new release for bowhunting? Here’s what to consider

For my money, I’d argue that the most underrated piece of equipment in a bowhunter’s entire arsenal is his release. It’s definitely not a sexy gadget, and for many archers, it seems to be an afterthought.
It’s a lot easier to spend cold, hard cash on a flashy new sight or a new set of camo duds – maybe pick up a new trail cam or two. But at the end of the day, apart from maybe your arrow rest, the release in your hand is the piece of equipment most responsible for where your arrow ends up.

Ryan Rothstein: With the fawning season comes hope, especially this spring

I never used to get too jazzed about spring. When I was a kid, I remember wishing away the seasons that weren’t fall, because any time that I couldn’t deer hunt was time wasted. Life sure was simpler back then.
These days, I’ve grown to appreciate the nuances that come with spring, particularly those that signal an end to winter and the beginning of a new growing season. Things as small as the first bloodroot blooming modestly on the forest floor cause me to smile and stop to appreciate how such a delicate plant could possibly be so stubbornly tough.

Ryan Rothstein: Turkeys not cooperating? Hunt them like deer

When I was younger, I made it an annual tradition to get absolutely spanked by wild turkeys. Every March, I would start practicing on my diaphragm calls, and I would read article upon article about how to kill a longbeard during each phase of the season.
I would try all the tactics I’d read about down to the letter and, without fail, I’d get close enough to think I’d seal the deal but would somehow blow it at the last second. This went on season after season, and the madder I’d get, the more determined I’d become to come out on top.

Ryan Rothstein: Of wolves, whitetails and wetlands; habitat loss the greatest threat to Minnesota’s wildlife

Quite frankly, I’m tired of hearing about wolves. Are they a factor regarding our deer herd? Without question. Wolves hunt and kill deer. So do coyotes. So do bears. So do we. You know what lowers deer populations more than all those things combined? Human development and intensive agriculture.
You’ll never hear me say wolves have no impact on deer herds. But bleating about wolves causing our deer-hunting problems is naïve at best, and nefarious at worst. Same scapegoat, different day.

Cost-share programs, Part 5: Are conservation easements the path for you?

Throughout this series, we’ve explored everything from locally-led, one-time habitat programs to 10-year contracts with either the Farm Service Agency or the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. These programs meet the needs of most any landowner looking to improve his or her habitat.
But one type of landowner likely has been wanting more.

Ryan Rothstein: Examining the Minnesota deer report with some perspective, some reality

Deer hunters down in the mouth after the most recent less-than-amazing state deer hunt might take solace in perspective – that while the harvest in 2023 took another dive, those more senior among us likely remember days upon days when even seeing a whitetail – or a deer track – was noteworthy.
