Summer whitetail scouting will set you up for success this fall

The hot trend this summer seems to be folks writing off summer whitetail scouting. While I’ve never thought it provided the most useful scouting intel available, I certainly wouldn’t crusade against it.

Kickin’ up dust? Try these tips for food-plotting during drought

If I were applying to be a marketer for Explore Minnesota, my pitch would play on their #OnlyInMinnesota theme. My tag would be: “Minnesota: the only state that goes from record snowfall to severe drought in just two months!”

Time to lay the groundwork for deer habitat projects

Frost-seeding clover food plots in spring can lead to fall whitetail success

The idea behind frost seeding is to use the earth “breathing” to our advantage. When we get to the part of spring when daytime highs are above freezing and nighttime lows dip below freezing, the soil begins to expand as temperatures rise and contract as temperatures drop. This is the perfect opportunity for small-sized seeds such as clovers to make that contact with the soil and slowly be worked into the ground on their own.

Here’s four places where whitetail antler sheds like to hide

Most deer hunters have spent years by now reading about the basics of shed hunting – you know, food sources, heavy trails, bedding areas, etc. No doubt, these are the places to start. I’m always big on playing the odds, and these areas provide the greatest chances for success. However, if you find yourself striking out on the usual suspects this spring, don’t forget to think outside the box with these four options.

Want to feed the appetites of hungry wintering deer? Here’s how

A couple of lessons I’ve had to learn during the past several years haven’t always been fun. First and foremost, if deer densities are remotely close to the carrying capacity of the habitat, there are going to be some fawns that don’t make it through winter.

If you’re wondering how to help the local deer herd, there are several actions you can take right now and into the future to stave off winter’s killing effects that do not involve putting out corn. Here’s what to keep in mind when thinking of winter whitetail nutrition.
