Outdoors scribe Scott Bestul, well-known for his whitetail expertise, dies at age 64

Southeast Minnesota-based outdoors writer and regular Outdoor News contributor Scott Bestul, age 64, died Saturday morning, April 19, after a 2.5-year battle with a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.
Bestul’s outdoors writing focused on a number of topics including turkey hunting, stream trout, and muskie fishing, but he was best known for his white-tailed deer hunting expertise, especially in the bluff country of southeast Minnesota, western Wisconsin, and northeast Iowa.

Minnesota’s trout and conservation community mourns loss of clean water champion Jeff Broberg

Jeff Broberg, 71, a clean water and trout fishing advocate and a giant on Minnesota’s conservation scene, died Saturday, April 12 from complications of pancreatic cancer.
In a Facebook post on March 29, Broberg shared his cancer diagnosis and thanked friends and family for their prayers. He said he was waiting for more details from the Mayo Clinic and asked for time to process the news. The disease progressed quickly, however, and two weeks after the social media post, he passed.

Outdoor Insights: Rare coaster brook trout discovered spawning in Minnesota waters of Lake Superior

Back in 1997, Outdoor News columnist Shawn Perich wrote a piece about efforts by the Grand Portage Band to restore brook trout to Lake Superior tributaries. The piece included a photo of Rick Novitsky, the band’s then-natural resources director, holding a plastic bag containing “Brooks,” one of 26 young brook trout the band recently had discovered in a North Shore tributary stream.
I remembered that story last week after reading reports that the Minnesota DNR discovered big, spawning “coaster” brook trout in the shallows of the great lake last October.

Minnesota Backcountry Hunters and Anglers selects new board chair

The Minnesota Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers has chosen outdoors educator Chance Adams of Tenstrike (north of Bemidji) as its new board chair.
The 11-member board voted on the position Tuesday evening. Adams, who has served as vice chair since January 2021, replaces Eli Mansfield who held the Minn. BHA gavel for nearly four years. Mansfield told Outdoor News that he’ll now serve the state BHA chapter as vice co-chair of policy.

Outdoor Insights: New perch bag limits on Minnesota’s Mille Lacs serve as a forward-facing sonar wake-up call

Two weeks ago, Minnesota DNR Fisheries restricted the bag limit for yellow perch on Lake Mille Lacs.
The fantastic jumbo bite there this winter produced big grins and piles of fillets for anglers, plus positive news for the Mille Lacs region. Coupled with the upcoming two-walleye bag beginning May 10, the year has kicked off well for the big lake. The perch limit slashing from 20 to five presents a case study that could’ve happened anywhere. I think we just witnessed the first major Minnesota DNR reaction to the huge effects of forward-facing sonar.

Outdoor Insights: ‘Accounting error’ means a 4% decline in available dollars for habitat work in Minnesota

Being a public watchdog sometimes means sitting through boring legislative hearings and wading through long reports, then summarizing them for readers.

Like this past Sunday evening, when I spent time perusing the thrilling, 102-page February 2025 Budget and Economic Forecast from the Minnesota Management and Budget office. The report arrived last week, and tucked into the bottom of Page 47 was a cold sentence that only a CPA could love.

Outdoor Insights: National parks are big business, so why are we gutting them?

Two weeks ago, the Trump administration announced it would lay off 1,000 National Park Service employees. A week later, after some backlash, we were hearing that some of those positions would be re-hired, and that additional seasonal staff would come on board in 2025.
Anyone trying to track the federal government layoffs knows it’s been chaotic, and it’ll be months before the dust settles.

Outdoor Insights: Will introduced elk adjust well to predators on the landscape in Minnesota’s northeast?

The DNR held two public meetings this week on the plan to start reintroducing elk to northeastern Minnesota by spring 2026. If you couldn’t make the meetings, you still can chime in on the plan, available at the DNR’s elk-management web page.
Citizens may complete an online questionnaire there through Feb. 28. You also can submit comments via email to ne.elk.plan.dnr@state.mn.us – again through Feb. 28.

Outdoor Insights: A special muskie regulation on Minnesota’s Leech Lake?

Leech Lake and its muskies have become ground zero in debate about forward-facing sonar and whether new regulations could protect big fish later into summer.
A document – “Minnesota’s Muskie Dilemma” –  reached my email in-box last week that outlines growing concern about the “over-catching” phenomena there in early summer using FFS in combination with other gadgets.
